Retail Award
Managers who hire and fire employees in the retail industry can be covered by the Retail Award.
To work out whether a manager is covered by the Retail Award, you need to look at all the duties they perform.
You can’t just look at whether the manager hires and fires employees.
If a manager’s other duties are covered by the classifications in the Retail Award, they can be covered by the Retail Award.
Example
Denzel is a shop manager who works at a large clothing retail store that has multiple departments. He trains and supervises employees at lower levels. He also assists in delegating daily tasks within the store.
Denzel’s managers provide information to him on budgets and he doesn't control expenditure. He keeps an eye on his team’s performance and makes recommendations about hiring and firing.
Denzel is covered by the General Retail Industry Award. He’s classified as a Retail Employee Level 8.
Award free
A retail manager who isn’t covered by the Retail Award will be award free.
They’re entitled to the national minimum wage and the National Employment Standards.References
