Part-time employees get paid a 15% allowance when working:

  • on weekends
  • ordinary hours, including on a public holiday
  • early morning, afternoon or non-permanent night shifts.

See Shift penalty rates in the Cleaning Award for more information about early morning, afternoon or non-permanent night shifts.

Example

Jimmy works part-time. He is rostered to work 6 ordinary hours on a public holiday.

For all hours that he works, Jimmy gets paid 265% of his minimum hourly rate. This includes:

  • 15% part-time allowance
  • 250% public holiday penalty rate.

When the allowance isn’t paid

Part-time employees don’t get paid the 15% allowance when they are:

  • working overtime
  • working permanent night shifts
  • not working on a public holiday but are paid for the hours they would normally work.

See Shift penalty rates in the Cleaning Award for more information about permanent night shifts.

Example

Scarlett is a permanent night shiftworker. She works part-time.

Scarlett gets paid 130% of her minimum hourly rate when she works.

She doesn’t get paid the 15% part-time allowance as well as the permanent night shift penalty rate.

Payment during leave

The 15% allowance is only paid during a period of annual leave if the employee works:

  • shiftwork (Monday to Friday), or
  • rostered ordinary hours on a Saturday or Sunday.

The allowance isn’t paid during other periods of leave. This includes personal/carer’s leave, compassionate leave or community service leave for jury duty.
