Award coverage for a café or roadhouse depends on how it’s operated and the type of service that’s provided.

Café or roadhouse operates as an integral part of the service station

The Vehicle Award covers the café or roadhouse if it’s operated as an integral part of the service station business.

It’s not enough for the café or roadhouse to just be located in the same building.

Café or roadhouse doesn’t operate as an integral part of the service station

The Vehicle Award doesn’t cover a café or roadhouse if it is legally and commercially separate and distinct from the operations of the service station.

In these circumstances, the café or roadhouse will be covered by the:

  • Fast Food Award, if the business mainly provides take-away food
  • Restaurant Award, if the business mainly provides a sit-down service.

Employers and employees should seek independent advice on whether a café or roadhouse is legally and commercially separate and distinct from a service station.
