Award coverage for employees working for a sushi vendor depends on the employer’s industry and the employees’ duties.

Fast Food Award

The Fast Food Award covers employees who make food and serve customers in the fast food industry. A sushi vendor is in the fast food industry if they take orders for, prepare and sell meals, drinks and snacks for customers to take away. This includes businesses such as:

  • take away sushi shops
  • sushi shops in food courts
  • sushi stands in supermarkets or department stores that aren’t operated by the main retailer.

Example

Lenny makes sushi at Fiona’s Sushi, a sushi stand inside a large supermarket.

Fiona’s Sushi rents space inside the shop. Customers can order and pay for freshly made sushi and salads at the Fiona’s Sushi counter.

The business also has a fridge where customers can pick up sushi that was made and packed on-site and pay for it at the Fiona’s Sushi counter or at the supermarket’s cash registers.

The main business of Fiona’s Sushi is preparing and selling meals for customers to take away.

Lenny and Fiona’s Sushi are covered by the Fast Food Award.

Restaurant Award

The Restaurant Award covers employees in the restaurant industry. A sushi vendor is in the restaurant industry if the business mainly sells food and drinks for customers to consume on the premises.

Retail Award

The Retail Award covers employees of businesses in the general retail industry that sell sushi but don’t prepare it, such as:

  • sushi stands or restaurants operated by supermarkets or department stores
  • convenience stores
  • supermarkets
  • take away sushi shops or stands that don’t prepare food or beverages.

Hospitality Award

The Hospitality Award covers employees working for sushi vendors that are part of the hospitality industry. For example, sushi restaurants run by hotels or resorts.
