Award coverage for flooring layers depends on:

  • the industry or industries their employer operates in
  • the specific duties and qualifications of the employee.

Flooring layers install floor coverings, including:

  • carpet
  • linoleum
  • rubber
  • floating timber planks.

Industry award coverage

An industry award will cover a flooring layer if:

  • their employer operates in the industry defined in the award
  • there’s a classification which matches the employee’s duties and qualifications.

Retail Award

The Retail Award covers flooring layers working for employers in the retail industry.

Example

Jennifer is a carpet layer, who has just started a new job with Magic Carpets, a shop selling carpet. Magic Carpets also measures, fits and installs carpets for customers.

Magic Carpets is covered by the Retail Award because it’s in the retail industry. Jennifer is based at their showroom, and travels to customers’ homes to lay the carpets they purchase.

Level 4 in the Retail Award covers employees with appropriate qualifications that they’re required to use in the course of their work. Jennifer has a Certificate III in flooring technology.

This means Jennifer is covered by the Retail Award.

Building and Construction Award

The Building and Construction Award covers flooring layers working for employers in the building and construction industry.

No industry award coverage

Flooring layers not covered by an industry award are covered by the Manufacturing Award on an occupational basis.
