Award coverage for employees working for a mobile food vendor such as a food truck business depends on:

  • the employer’s industry
  • where it’s operating
  • the employees’ duties.

Travelling Shows

The Travelling Shows Award covers itinerant employers and their employees selling food at travelling shows.

Travelling shows are:

  • agricultural or horticultural shows
  • carnivals
  • rodeos
  • gymkhanas
  • community events
  • festivals.

Example

Dulcinea owns a food truck that sells fairy floss and churros at agricultural shows.

She travels from town to town with her family, taking her business wherever the next agricultural show is being held.

Dulcinea sometimes employs casual staff at busy times.

The Travelling Shows Award covers Dulcinea’s itinerant food truck business.

Fast Food

The Fast Food Award covers employees who make food and serve customers in the fast food industry. A mobile food vending business is in the fast food industry if they take orders for, prepare and sell drinks, meals and snacks for customers to take away.

Example

Iain’s Gourmet Food Van makes and sells pancakes served with genuine Canadian maple syrup at a farmer’s market held at the local school every week.

Iain runs his business from his home. Iain’s employees drive the van to the market each week and make and sell the pancakes from the van.

Sometimes, Iain hires out the van for festivals or community events.

The Fast Food Award covers Iain’s Gourmet Food Van, even when it’s at a festival, because his business isn’t itinerant.

Retail

The Retail Award covers workers in food trucks that aren’t part of another industry if the business sells food but doesn’t prepare it.

Other industries

Mobile food vendors are sometimes part of a business in another industry. Employees at these food outlets are generally covered by the award that covers the rest of the business.

Examples

The Amusement Award covers an ice-cream cart owned and run by a theme park or a zoo.

The Hospitality Award covers a food truck owned and run by a hotel or resort.

Employees who only drive a food truck may be covered by the Road Transport Award if there’s no appropriate classification for them in the award that generally covers the business.
