Local drivers who are covered by the Road Transport Award may sometimes need to drive long distances.

A long distance is:

  • a return journey of more than 500 kilometres or
  • an interstate journey, from one state or territory to a different state or territory, of more than 200 kilometres.

If they’re in the private transport industry, they’re covered by the Road Transport (Long Distance) Award when they drive a long distance. All the terms of the Road Transport (Long Distance) Award apply when this happens.

Drivers who are usually covered by the Road Transport Award are also paid an allowance if they work under the Road Transport (Long Distance) Award. To find out the amount of this allowance and their pay rate, use our Pay Calculator.

If a local driver covered by the Road Transport Award isn’t in the private transport industry the Road Transport Award still covers them, even when they drive long distances.
