Award coverage for photographers, photographers' assistants or photographic employees depends on:

  • the industry or industries their employer operates in
  • the specific duties and qualifications of the employee.

Photographers

An industry award covers a photographer if:

  • their employer operates in the industry defined in the award
  • there’s a classification which matches the employee’s duties and qualifications.

For example, a photographer may be covered by one of the following industry awards:

Amusement Award

The Amusement Award covers employees providing photographic services in a venue covered by the Amusement Award.

Broadcasting Award

The Broadcasting Award covers still photographers in TV and film production.

Journalists Award

The Journalists Award covers photo journalists working in the published media industry.

No industry award coverage

Photographers not covered by an industry award are covered by the Miscellaneous Award. For example, photographers working in the retail industry.

They’ll be classified according to their duties and qualifications.

Photographers' assistants

A photographer’s assistant performs duties such as carrying and setting up a photographer’s equipment. They don’t take photographs.

For example, a photographer’s assistant may be covered by one of the following industry awards:

  • Amusement Award
  • Broadcasting Award
  • Retail Award

If the assistant isn’t covered by an industry award, they are covered by the Miscellaneous Award. They’ll be classified according to their duties.

Photographic employees

A photographic employee perform duties such as processing photos or film, retouching and resizing photos and photo engraving.

For example, a photographic employee may be covered by one of the following industry awards:

Retail Award

The Retail Award covers businesses in the retail industry which do photo printing and processing including:

  • studios or retail shops that provide photography services to private customers, such as for weddings or family portraits
  • school photography businesses
  • businesses that do photo printing and processing.

Employees processing photos or film, including digital photos, and are based at a retail establishment are classified as a Retail Employee Level 1.

Employees that retouch or resize photos are classified depending on their level of skill and training.

Photographers who work in the retail industry aren’t covered by the Retail Award. They are covered by the Miscellaneous Award.

Manufacturing Award

The Manufacturing Award covers businesses in manufacturing and associated industries and occupations that print and process photos from film.

Graphic Arts and Printing Award

The Graphic Arts and Printing Award covers businesses that retouch photos, resize photos and do photo engraving.

Employees are classified depending on their level of competence, skill and training.
