Casuals get overtime when they work:

  • more than 38 hours per week, averaged over 4 weeks
  • outside the ordinary spread of hours
  • more than 8 hours per day on Monday to Friday.

The ordinary spread of hours is 7am to 7pm, Monday to Friday. Ordinary hours can't be worked on Saturday or Sunday.

Employers and employees can agree to change the ordinary spread of hours by shifting it back or forward by up to an hour. For example 6am to 6pm or 8am to 8pm.

Employees can also agree to work up to 10 hours in a day without being paid overtime.

Payment for overtime work

When casuals work overtime they get paid:

  • 175% of their ordinary hourly rate for the first 3 hours
  • 225% of their ordinary hourly rate after 3 hours.

The overtime rates are inclusive of the casual loading.
