We are currently reviewing coverage provisions for community and adult education teaching under the Educational Services (Post-Secondary) Award.

We encourage you to check back regularly for updates.

Award coverage for driving instructors (instructors) and trainers of driving instructors (trainers) depends on:

  • the industry or industries their employer operates in
  • the specific duties and qualifications of the employee.

Industry award coverage

An industry award covers an instructor or trainer if:

  • their employer operates in the industry defined in the award
  • there's a classification which matches the employee's duties and qualifications.

Educational Services (Post-Secondary) Award

The Educational Services (Post-Secondary) Award can cover instructors or trainers if:

  • they work for an employer in the post-secondary educational services industry who provides vocational education and training
  • the instruction or training leads to the person having a qualification recognised within the Australian Quality Framework (AQF).

Examples of the types of instructors or trainers that can be covered by the Educational Services (Post-Secondary) Award include:

  • heavy vehicle and forklift instructors - delivering AQF units which form part of heavy vehicle and forklift licences
  • trainers of driving instructors - teaching people to become AQF qualified driving instructors.

No industry award coverage

Instructors and trainers not covered by an industry award are covered by the Miscellaneous Award. They’ll be classified based on their duties and qualifications.

Vehicle Award

The Vehicle Award covers employers in the vehicle, repair, services and retail industry who operate a driving school. However, there’s no classification for instructors or trainers. This means they can’t be covered by the Vehicle Award.
