Coverage for teachers depends on:
- where they teach
- what they are teaching
- the age of the student
- the qualifications the teacher has.
Coverage for trainers and tutors depends on:
- where they work
- the age of the student.
Teachers Award
The Teachers Award covers qualified and unqualified teachers in the:
- children’s services and early childhood education industry
- school education industry.
A teacher with no qualifications can be classified under ‘all other teachers’.
Educational Services (Schools) General Staff Award
The Educational Services (Schools) General Staff Award covers the following trainers and tutors in the school education industry:
- sporting coach or trainer who isn’t covered by the Teachers Award
- music tutor, where the activity is part of an extra-curricular music program.
An employee’s classification level depends on their duties, experience and/or qualifications.
A music tutor instructing students as part of a school’s music curriculum will be covered by the Teachers Award. The relevant classification will depend on their qualifications.
Educational Services (Post-Secondary) Award
The Educational Services (Post-Secondary) Award covers teachers, trainers and tutors, in the post-secondary education industry.
Employees will be classified as:
- academic teachers if they’re teaching at the bachelor’s degree or higher academic level
- teachers if they’re teaching courses recognised by the Australian Qualifications Framework or accredited by a relevant state or territory, or
- tutor/instructor if they’re leading courses that aren’t accredited, for example adult knitting classes.
