Day off on a public holiday
Full-time drivers
Full-time drivers get the minimum weekly rate divided by 38.
They must be paid for a minimum of 7.6 ordinary hours.
Part-time drivers
Part-time drivers get the minimum weekly rate divided by 38.
They must be paid for the ordinary hours they would have worked on the day.
Working on a public holiday
Drivers get their cents per kilometre rate for the distance driven on a public holiday plus one of the following amounts:
- 30% of the minimum weekly rate for their classification for work on Good Friday or Christmas Day
- 20% of the minimum weekly rate for their classification for work on any other public holiday.
Casuals also get a 15% casual loading calculated on their cents per kilometre rate.
Full-time and part-time drivers must be paid for at least 4 hours' work on a public holiday.
Casuals must be paid for at least 8 hours' work or 500km on a public holiday.
Example
Kathleen is a full-time grade 4 driver driving from Melbourne to Sydney on Christmas Day.
Kathleen will get 51.62 cents for each kilometre she drives.
She’ll also get the public holiday penalty which her employer works out to be 30% of the $992.70 grade 4 minimum weekly pay rate.
Her employer pays her the public holiday penalty of $297.81 plus her per kilometre payment.
