Award coverage for karaoke businesses depends on the industry and type of business the employer is in.
Employees are classified based on their skills and duties.
Stand-alone karaoke rooms
The Amusement Award covers stand-alone karaoke businesses that provide room hire. These businesses may or may not have a kitchen onsite.
Example
Joys Karaoke Bar is a stand-alone karaoke room hire business. Customers pay for the room hire upfront at reception, and food/drinks are available to purchase.
The Amusement Award covers Joys Karaoke Bar.
Karaoke as part of another business
Bars and pubs are covered by the Hospitality Award. They will still be covered by the Hospitality Award if they offer karaoke.
Karaoke hosts
A karaoke host is covered by the Live Performance Award.
Their classification under the Live Performance Award will depend on the work they do and the principal purpose of their role.
A karaoke host:
- may work at different venues
- sets up karaoke equipment
- performs songs and encourages others to perform.
Example
Jade runs an outdoor karaoke & dance kids party business.
She hires Imogen as a professional karaoke entertainer. Imogen performs songs and teaches little party guests how to sing and dance. She is covered by the Live Performance Award under the relevant performer category classification.
