Pay
July 2016 – June 2017
Norfolk Island employees got 85% of the relevant national minimum wage from 1 July 2016 to 30 June 2017.
For adult employees, this was $15.05 (85% of $17.70).
For junior employees the rates were:

Apprentices and trainees got 85% of the relevant apprentice or trainee wage in the Miscellaneous Award.
Casual employees also started getting an extra 25% on top of the minimum rate. This loading makes up for not getting other entitlements, such as paid annual leave or paid personal leave.
July 2017 – June 2018
All Norfolk Island employees were entitled to the full relevant national minimum wage from 1 July 2017 to 30 June 2018.
The national minimum wage for national system adult employees was $18.29 per hour.
Junior employees got paid a percentage of the national minimum wage, using the age-based percentage scale of the Miscellaneous Award. To calculate junior rates, use our Pay and Conditions Tool and select:
- a calculation date between 1 July 2017 – 30 June 2018
- the Miscellaneous Award
- Classification Level 1
- the age of the junior employee.
Apprentices and trainees in Norfolk Island got the relevant apprentice or trainee wage in the Miscellaneous Award. To calculate the rate, use our Pay and Conditions Tool and select:
- a calculation date between 1 July 2017 – 30 June 2018
- the Miscellaneous Award
- an apprentice or trainee classification.
An employee with reduced work capacity because of disability could, in some cases, be paid a percentage of the national minimum wage. For more information about employees with disability, see Employees with disability pay rates.
Casual employees continued to get an extra 25% on top of the minimum rate. This loading makes up for not getting other entitlements, such as paid annual leave or paid personal leave.
Entitlements
From 1 July 2016, Norfolk Island employees were entitled to:
- the National Employment Standards
- pay slip and record-keeping obligations.
Norfolk Island laws
Contracts, agreements and determinations made under the following laws stopped applying from 1 July 2018:
- Norfolk Island Employment Act 1988
- Norfolk Island Public Service Act 2014
- Norfolk Island Public Sector Remuneration Tribunal Act 1992.
