A motel manager is responsible for managing the day-to-day running of the motel and its staff and services. Some motel managers live onsite. Their duties may also include tasks such as sales, cleaning and administrative work, as required.
Depending on their duties and qualifications, a motel manager will either be:
- covered by the Miscellaneous Award, or
- award free.
A motel manager isn’t covered by the Hospitality Award, even though this Award covers employers who operate a motel. This is because there is no classification in the Hospitality Award for motel managers.
Miscellaneous Award
The Miscellaneous Award doesn’t cover managerial employees or professional employees.
Whether a motel manager is covered by the Miscellaneous Award will depend on whether the specific duties and qualification requirements of the role are managerial most of the time.
For example, a motel manager is more likely to be covered by the Miscellaneous Award if there are no qualification requirements for their role.
Employers and employees may wish to seek independent advice on their own situation.
Award free
An employee who is not covered by the Miscellaneous Award is award free.
For example, a motel manager who is required to hold a relevant qualification is more likely to be award free.
They’re entitled to the national minimum wage and the National Employment Standards.
