Whether an award covers a stable hand depends on:

  • the industry or industries their employer operates in
  • the specific duties and qualifications of the employee.

Industry award coverage

An industry award covers a stable hand if:

  • their employer operates in the industry defined in the award
  • there's a classification which matches the employee's duties.

For example, a stable hand may be covered by one of the following industry awards:

  • Amusement Award – covers horse riding schools or equestrian centres.
  • Animal and Veterinary Services Award – covers veterinary surgeries and community-based charity organisation working to prevent animal cruelty.
  • Horse and Greyhound Award – covers the horse racing industry, including the pre-training of horses.
  • Pastoral Award – covers employers breeding horses for the purpose of sale, for example a stud farm.
  • Travelling Shows Award – covers the travelling shows industry.

No industry award coverage

If there's no industry award covering the employer of a stable hand, they can be covered by the Miscellaneous Award and classified according to their duties and qualifications.

Horse agistment

A stable hand working for an employer that primarily operates a horse agistment business providing accommodation and services such as feeding, washing and training can be covered by the Miscellaneous Award. They will be classified according to their duties and qualifications.
