The award that covers a cleaner depends on:
- the industry or industries their employer operates in
- the specific role and responsibilities of the employee.
Industry award coverage
An industry award covers a cleaner if:
- their employer operates in the industry defined in the award
- there's a classification which matches the employee's duties and qualifications.
Cleaning Award
The Cleaning Award covers cleaners whose employers operate in the contract cleaning services industry.
The contract cleaning services industry means providing cleaning services under a contract.
Other industry awards
If their employer doesn't operate in the contract cleaning services industry, cleaners may be covered by another industry award if there's a classification for them.
For example, a cleaner may be covered by one of the following industry awards:
- Banking, Finance and Insurance Award
- Children’s Services Award
- Fitness Award
- Hospitality Award
- Retail Award
- Vehicle Award.
Example
Kai owns a cleaning company that only provides guestroom cleaning for hotels and motels.
His business operates within the hospitality industry defined in the Hospitality Award.
Kai’s employees are covered by the Hospitality Award under the relevant Guest services stream classification.
No industry award coverage
Cleaners not covered by an industry award are covered by the Miscellaneous Award. They'll be classified according to their duties and qualifications.
