Rock climbing instructors work outdoors on natural surfaces and at indoor climbing venues.

The award that covers a rock climbing instructor depends on:

  • the industry or industries their employer operates in
  • the specific role and responsibilities of the employee.

Industry award coverage

An industry award covers a rock climbing instructor if:

  • their employer operates in the industry defined in the award
  • there's a classification which matches the employee's duties and qualifications.

Fitness Award

The Fitness Award covers a rock climbing instructor whose employer operates in the fitness industry.

The fitness industry includes the operation of indoor sports centres, fitness centres, services and classes.

Example

Banjo is a rock climbing and bouldering instructor and coach. He works at a rock climbing centre that offers indoor climbing and bouldering walls.

He is certified to provide sports coaching in climbing.

Banjo’s employer is in the fitness industry.  He’s covered by the Fitness Award.

Example

Britt teaches rock climbing. She travels between outdoor climbing sites to teach groups rock climbing skills in natural settings. There is no shopfront for the business. Students sign up for the classes online.

Britt’s employer is in the fitness industry. She’s covered by the Fitness Award.

Amusement Award

The Amusement Award covers an employee whose employer operates in the amusement, events, and recreation industry.

Example

Paulie is a climbing wall instructor at an adventure park. The park offers a range of activities for kids and adults, including laser tag, ten-pin bowling, a playground and ziplining.

Paulie’s employer is in the amusement, events, and recreation industry. Paulie is covered by the Amusement Award.

No industry award coverage

If there's no industry award covering the employer of a rock climbing instructor or coach, they may be covered by the Miscellaneous Award and classified according to their duties and qualifications.
