Professional organisers help customers organise their homes and workspaces. They may also specialise in organising customers’ finances, paperwork or digital files.
Declutter coaches provide support to customers while they go through the organisation process.
Sometimes a single employee will fill both roles, or a professional organiser will work with a declutter coach.
Industry award coverage
An industry award will cover a professional organiser or declutter coach if:
- their employer operates in the industry defined in the award
- there’s a classification which matches the employee’s duties and qualifications.
For example, the Health Services Award may cover a declutter coach who is a qualified counsellor and provides the declutter coaching as part of a counselling service.

No industry award coverage
Where there’s no industry award covering professional organisers and declutter coaches, the employee might be:
- covered by an occupational award, such as the Clerks Award
- covered by the Miscellaneous Award, or
- award free.
This depends on the employee’s duties and qualifications.
Clerks Award
The Clerks Award may cover a professional organiser or declutter coach if their role is mainly clerical and administrative.
The employee’s classification depends on their skills, qualifications, and responsibilities.
For example, an administrative declutter coach who helps customers organise their paper or digital files and accounts can be covered by the Clerks Award.
Miscellaneous Award
The Miscellaneous Award can cover professional organisers or declutter coaches if:
- they're not a clerical employee covered by the Clerks Award
- they’re not a managerial or professional employee.
An employee may be considered a managerial employee if they manage an organising or decluttering business.
Most professional organisers and declutter coaches will be covered by the Miscellaneous Award.
They’ll be classified based on their duties and qualifications.
Example
Harriett is employed as a professional organiser, specialising in organising customers’ collections and hobbies.
Harriett doesn’t have any qualifications and has been employed in the role for one year.
Harriett is a level 2 employee under the Miscellaneous Award.
Award free
Professional organisers and declutter coaches not covered by an industry or occupational award, or by the Miscellaneous Award, will be award free.
They're entitled to the national minimum wage and the National Employment Standards.
