The Restaurant Award covers food and beverage supervisors working in stand-alone restaurants.

There are no classifications for managers in the Restaurant Award.

Food and beverage supervisors covered by the Restaurant Award

Food and beverage supervisors are classified as level 5 employees.

Supervisors report to and take direction from a manager or owner.

To be classified as a level 5 employee, a supervisor must have both:

  • a level of training suitable for their position
  • completed a supervisory course, for example a Certificate IV in Hospitality.

They supervise, train and co-ordinate the activities of staff.

Managers not covered by the Restaurant Award

Managers working in restaurants covered by the Restaurant Award will be covered by the Miscellaneous Award or award free, depending on their level of seniority.

To work out whether an employee is a supervisor or manager and their level of seniority, all the duties they perform should be looked at. For example:

  • whether they were mainly employed as a manager
  • the level of authority and independent judgment they exercise
  • who they supervise, for example whether they supervise senior staff
  • whether they're involved in performance management, hiring decisions and termination of staff.

Miscellaneous Award

Supervisors who don’t have a supervisory qualification

An employee who performs the duties of a food and beverage supervisor but hasn’t completed a supervisory course can’t be classified as a level 5 under the Restaurant Award.

An employee with a supervisor title or performing supervisor duties who can’t be classified under the Restaurant Award will be covered by the Miscellaneous Award. Their classification will depend on their experience and qualifications.

If their duties don’t involve the training, co-ordination and supervision of other staff or managerial duties, they may be covered by a lower classification under the Restaurant Award.

Managers

A manager who works under the direction of senior management and has limited responsibility may be covered by the Miscellaneous Award. An example is an employee who manages one area of a restaurant.

Their classification will depend on their experience and qualifications.

Example

Domenica is employed as a food and beverage supervisor in a large restaurant. She supervises, trains and co-ordinates a team of 8 food and beverage attendants. She reports to the venue manager.

She has worked as a food and beverage supervisor for 3 years and has a responsible service of alcohol certificate. She doesn’t have a supervisory qualification.

Domenica is covered by the Miscellaneous Award because she:

  • doesn't have a supervisory qualification
  • has limited responsibilities which extend to only one area of the restaurant
  • reports to and is under the direction of the venue manager.

Award free

Managers employed to perform the duties of senior management are award free. For example, an employee who is responsible for managing a restaurant, including making financial decisions.

They’re entitled to the national minimum wage and the National Employment Standards.
