A barista prepares coffee-based drinks, teas and other specialty drinks for customers. The role may include tasks such as taking drink orders, food and beverage service and receiving money. 

A barista’s classification in the Restaurant Award and Hospitality Award depends on their level of skill, experience, training and responsibilities.

Hospitality Award

Baristas covered by the Hospitality Award can be classified under the food and beverage stream as a food and beverage attendant grade 2 or 3.

Example

Laura is a barista who works in a food truck that is owned and run by a caravan park.

As well as performing barista duties, she also receives money and keeps the food truck clean and tidy.

Laura is a food and beverage attendant grade 2 under the Hospitality Award.

Restaurant Award

Baristas covered by the Restaurant Award can be classified under the food and beverage stream as a food and beverage attendant grade 2 or 3.

Example

June is a barista who works at Bel-lai café. The café is located within a community complex next to a children’s play centre. The café isn’t part of the play centre, although the majority of its customers are also customers of the play centre.

She has completed an appropriate level of training that is relevant to her duties. In addition to her day-to-day duties, she assists in training and supervising other baristas of a lower classification.

June is a food and beverage attendant grade 3 under the Restaurant Award.
