The Retail Award covers clerical employees who work at, or in connection with, a retail establishment.
For more information, see Meaning of ‘retail establishment’ in the Retail Award.
Where a clerical employee works away from a retail establishment, they will generally be covered by the Clerks Award instead.
Example: Clerks Award
Matt is a bookkeeper employed by a sunglasses retailer. He works at the company’s head office, which is located separately to the retailer’s stores. His duties include maintaining financial records, preparing accounts, and processing invoices.
No retail sales, customer service, online sales, order processing, or other activities directly connected with the sale of goods to consumers are conducted at the head office. Matt’s work supports the business at an organisational level and isn’t connected with the retail sale of goods to consumers.
This means the head office isn’t a retail establishment for the purposes of the Retail Award.
Matt is covered by the Clerks Award.
Example: Retail Award
Sharon works as an admin assistant for a large clothing store. She works in an office within the retail store.
Sharon performs clerical work at the clothing store so she’s covered by the Retail Award.
