Employees working as console operators, driveway attendants and roadhouse attendants at a service or petrol station are covered by the Vehicle Award.

Console operator

A console operator operates the fuel console and cash register. They may also serve retail customers and perform general customer service duties. 

A console operator working at a service station can also perform the duties of a:

  • service/petrol station cashier
  • customer service assistant
  • checkout operator

The classification level for a console operator is Level 4 R4.

Driveway attendant

Driveway attendants are also known as service station attendants. They generally perform the following duties relating to motor vehicles:

  • checking and refilling air pressure in tyres and vehicle fluid levels such as engine oil
  • fill fuel tanks and containers as required by a customer
  • perform minor repair work, for example replacing light bulbs, tyres and windscreen wiper blades
  • sell fuel, lubricants and other automotive accessories

The classification level for a driveway attendant is Level 1 R1.

Roadhouse attendants

The Vehicle Award covers the café or roadhouse if it’s operated as an integral part of the service station business.

Roadhouse attendants classified under the Vehicle Award may be required to prepare or assist in food preparation at a café, kiosk, snack bar or restaurant that is operated as part of a service station.

Roadhouse attendants with duties that may include cooking or preparing take away meals are classified as Level 2 R2.

Roadhouse attendants engaged to primarily cook meals for dine-in services are classified as Level 4 R4. 

Penalties for Casual employees

Casual console operators, driveway attendants and roadhouse attendants get different loadings and penalties to other casuals under the Vehicle Award.

Example - casual console operator working overtime

Javert is a casual console operator. This week, all his hours (12) were worked on Saturday.

Casual console operators get overtime when they work in excess of 10 hours a day (or 38 hours per week). The overtime penalty is paid in addition to the relevant casual rate.

The Level 4 R4 minimum hourly rate is $25.80 (effective from 1 July 2024). Javert gets:

  • (12 hours x weekend casual console operator rate) + (2 hours overtime)
  • [12 x (171.87% x $25.80)] + [2 x (73.40% x $25.80)]
  • (12 x $44.34) + (2 x $18.94)
  • $532.08 + $37.88
  • $569.96

Javert gets $569.96 for working 12 hours on the Saturday.
