Some accommodation venues covered by the Hospitality Award employ hair and beauty therapists in spas or beauty clinics onsite.
Non-managerial employees are not covered by the Hospitality Award because there’s no classification to cover the type of work that they do.
Managers of onsite spas and beauty clinics may be covered by the Managerial staff (Hotels) stream. See Managers in the Hospitality Award for more information.
An employer operating a hospitality accommodation venue can be covered by more than one award.
See Award coverage for hair and beauty employees working in other industries for information about coverage under the Alpine Resorts Award.
Industry award coverage
Hair and Beauty Award
Hair and beauty employees working in hotel spas are covered by the Hair and Beauty Award if:
- they perform tasks that fall within the hair and beauty industry
- there’s a classification that matches their duties, qualifications and responsibilities.
Example
Tia is a beauty therapist in a day spa within a seaside resort. Tia provides facials, hot stone massage, hair dressing and waxing services.
Tia holds a Diploma in Beauty Therapy and is a level 6 hair and beauty employee under the Hair and Beauty Award.
Health Services Award
The Health Services Award can cover therapists in beauty clinics and spas operated by an employer running a hospitality accommodation venue.
See Award coverage for massage therapists for more information on massage therapists covered by this award.
No industry award coverage
Hair and beauty employees employed by a hospitality accommodation venue who are not covered by an industry or occupational award will be:
- covered by the Miscellaneous Award, or
- award free.
Miscellaneous Award
The Miscellaneous Award can cover a hair and beauty employee employed by a hospitality accommodation venue if they’re not a professional employee or a manager.
Award free employees
A hair and beauty employee employed by a hospitality accommodation venue who isn’t covered by an industry award or the Miscellaneous Award is award free.
Award free employees are entitled to the national minimum wage and the National Employment Standards.
